The analysis was carried out on a part of the South Bavarian road network, and it is the first attempt to apply the HDM-III model for optimizing road maintenance and rehabilitation in this West European country. The results obtained clearly point to the numerous advantages of using the HDM-III model, if regional specificities are realistically presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the critical analysis of HDM-III model results with respect to the great number of input parameters used as a basis for modeling, including the possibility of error in defining individual values of so many parameters. The influence of various parameters on the performance of the model is analyzed in detail. This task is performed in the context of a sensitivity analysis of the HDM-III model. The analysis justified the global ranking of input data according to their importance in the HDM system. The research was carried out in Munich, Germany, in 1991.
Supplemental Notes: The proceedings of the Third International Conference on Managing Pavements is published in three volumes. Volumes 1 and 2, published prior to the conference, include papers to be presented at the conference. Volume 3, published after the conference, contains additional papers presented at the plenary and workshop sessions.
