Digital Copy: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Following a brief historical review of the legal situation of Native Americans in the United States, this article summarizes the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) provisions concerning Native Americans and the legislation protecting Native American archeological and religious sites and graves. A summary is then made of the 1992 Transportation Research Board (TRB) conference on Native American transportation concerns. The conference was chaired by Native American leaders. Tribal members in attendance defined the issues and questions to be answered. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Federal Highway Administration, and the state departments of transportation participated and responded to these issues. The needs identified by Native American participants in the conference workshops and at the plenary sessions are listed in this article, followed by comments on future TRB activities relating to Native American transportation issues.
