Abstract: The purpose of this Management Guide is (1) to provide a basic understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) and geographic information systems for transportation (GIS-T); (2) to describe the factors involved in successful planning and implementation of GIS-T; (3) to provide a basic understanding of how GIS-T can benefit transportation agencies; and (4) to describe benefit-cost considerations and methods for evaluating the success of GIS-T implementation. The work reported herein is intended to provide a basis on which individual transportation agencies can develop or revitalize--and then proceed with--plans to exploit GIS technology to the fullest in both the near-term and long-term futures. The Guide is organized in the following chapters: (1) Introduction; (2) Definition and Role of GIS-T; (3) Critical Success Factors; (4) Planning and Implementation Process; (5) Technical and Organizational Considerations; (6) System Justification and Evaluation; (7) Statewide Cooperative Efforts; and (8) Future Directions. A glossary is provided.
