The global airline industry was the focus of a great deal of interest at the 1993 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. Several sessions examined the implications of globalization for the airline industry and the consumers of its services. This article presents a discussion of (a) trends in airline globalization and why airlines are seeking to link up with those from other countries; (b) the legal, political, and regulatory environment for airline services that will condition how globalization is likely to affect industry structure and airline competition worldwide; and (c) some of the alliances forged by airlines in 1992.
