First, the downturn reduced traffic. Second, oil prices rose, squeezing airline profit margins. Third, the war and terrorists threats put a crimp on travel. The world economy will recover, growth will resume, and the airline industry will do well in the decade to come, but there will be some significant regional differences worldwide that should be borne in mind. This workshop presentation examines the overall economic outlook for the air transport industry by discussing the following three areas: (1) the recent recession; (2) the recovery both in the near term and the longer term for the United States and the world; and (3) the expected effects and the risks for the air transport industry.
