The selection decision between AVI/ETTM versus 'conventional' lanes is dependent on three basic characteristics: (1) capacity by lane type; (2) anticipated levels of AVI participation; and (3) ideal toll plaza configurations as impacted by predetermined maximum allowable queue lengths. The results of this evaluation provide guidelines in the planning and conceptual design phases of toll barrier renovations, and new toll facilities where AVI/ETTM is being considered.
