The geotechnical data base is obtained from earlier soil investigations and is continuously updated by adding the results of new investigations. The GTIS can be used to estimate soil properties at a specified location within a geographical area that may have not yet been explored. A "synthetic" soil boring log and profile can be generated for a particular site within the geographical area using the existing information in the data base of neighboring boring logs in addition to other subjective information about the area such as its deposition history. The feasibility of this concept is demonstrated by a prototype GTIS developed along these lines for part of Jefferson Parish County in New Orleans.
