Abstract:

This paper describes the North Carolina Department of Transportation's apprenticeship program for the training of equipment maintenance personnel. The program combines classroom training and on the job training under the supervision of a journeyman mechanic. Classroom training is provided by a community college, manufacturer or the DOT training department. The current requirement is 272 hours of instruction per year. Along with scheduled technical courses, instruction covers math, first responder first aid, oral and written communications, and human relations.
