ASSESSMENT OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR RELIEVING URBAN TRAFFIC CONGESTION: INTERIM REPORT

Accession Number:

00771743

Record Type:

Monograph

Abstract:

This report documents and presents the interim results of the first phase of a study to assess advanced technologies for relieving urban traffic congestion. A wide range of technologies is reviewed covering driver information and communication systems, traffic control systems and automatic vehicle control systems. Preliminary benefit- cost analyses are presented in the report for selected technologies which show potential for alleviating congestion. The report proceeds in examining implementation issues concerned with funding and operation of the systems, together with issues of potential user acceptance. Finally, the report concludes with a recommendation that three technologies - electronic route guidance, the Radio Data System and adaptive traffic control - are investigated further in the second phase of the project, prior to development of research, development and demonstration plans.
