Title: A NUCLEAR DENSITY GAUGE FOR THIN OVERLAYS OF ASPHALT CONCRETE

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The principle of operation of a new thin layer backscatter density gauge is presented in this paper. Field and laboratory data are used to verify the accuracy of this gauge for directly measuring the density of a thin overlay of material applied over an underlying base material. This instrument requires only a good estimate of the overlay thickness to measure the overlay density. The bottom density is algebraically eliminated from the gauge equations, enabling the top density to be calculated using an internal microprocessor. This gauge will be helpful in the road construction industry for measurement of thin overlay density of asphaltic concrete.
