Abstract:

Deteriorating longitudinal pavement joints can present significant safety risks, brought on by loose pavement material and flying debris. This article discusses the importance of maintaining longitudinal joints and designing them to last. Maintenance examples highlight the use of microsurfacing in longitudinal joint maintenance from Minnesota Department of Transportation and the benefits of evaluating joint sealant longevity via sealant test sections from Arizona, Washington State, and Illinois.
