Digital Copy: Abstract: This publication describes the National Cooperative Research and Development Program which is a unique subcontract research effort designed to respond quickly and efficiency to the needs of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration and the transit industry through solution of near-term public transportation problems. The programs and financing are described as well as how the NCTRP is organized to administer research programs. It is explained how projects are placed under contract, how research in progress is monitored, as well as the systematic planning for getting research results from NCTRP projects into practice. The implementation of research results is also discussed. Current projects and their progress are listed in the following areas: economic, finance, policy development, personnel management, labor relations, procurement, alternative analysis, forecasting, system planning, route planning, impact analysis, vehicles, vehicle auxiliary systems, track and ancillary systems, stations, bridges and tunnels, general design, general materials, specifications, procedures, practices, maintenance of way and structures, scheduling, control systems, energy efficiency, performance effectiveness and efficiency, fare collection, and supplemental services and special projects.
