Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Geographic information systems are devices for processing data with a geographic component and have been hailed as an adroit solution to the manager's dilemma of high demand for quality information and low supply of human resources with which to meet the demand. One such system, the Geographic Road Network Data Base developed by the Division of Government Research at the University of New Mexico, is described. The capability of the system to present transportation information, such as the incidence of vehicular accidents and the status of roads, is demonstrated by a series of maps generated by the system. Finally, the future role of the system in other transportation applications is briefly discussed.
