Accession Number: 00455816
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In recent years a merger wave has swept the rail freight industry. An attempt to measure the effects of recent mergers on railroad productivity and performance is described. Specifically, financial performance [return on investment (ROI) and return on equity (ROE)], capacity, operating characteristics, and operating costs are compared for 1978 and 1983. Mergers appear to have produced some benefits, particularly in improved financial performance and reduced operating costs.
