Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Studies made by the New York State Department of Transportation to justify implementation of a computer-aided drafting (CAD) system for structural drafting are described. A demonstration project using existing available equipment during offshift hours was organized to evaluate operations for this application and provide drawing productivity data. Observations, productivity results, and recommendations for a full-scale drafting operation are presented. The project results were the basis for an analysis to quantify potential cost savings and to recommend a CAD system configuration. The assumptions, methodology, and results of the cost savings and to recommend a CAD system configuration. The assumptions, methodology, and results of the cost analysis are outlined. The findings led to the conclusion that CAD is well justified from a cost standpoint provided minimum work-load and system utilization requirements are met.
