Title: DESIGN NOTES FOR A SAFER HALF MEGAGRAM AUTOMOBILE (DISCUSSION)
Accession Number: 00378514
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Citing crash tests, the author argues that, if designed well, half megagram vehicles, including three-wheeled ones, can be made safer. Suggested modifications include hydraulic bumpers, air bags, allowing two feet in front of the passenger compartment so that objects do not penetrate it and built-in microelectonic radar systems for crash avoidance. The author concedes that horsepower and acceleration may have to be reduced to maintain fuel economy but argues the most of the horsepower in most current engines (over 100 even though a car can be kept at 50 mph with only 12) is superfluous.
