Abstract:

This article points out how transportation policymakers and analysis have both benefited and been handicapped by the existence of data collected by regulatory agencies for regulatory purposes. The outlook for data supply is discussed and it is noted that the supply of data from regulatory agencies will be reduced although the extent of the reductions is less clear. The question of the type of data necessary to monitor the effects of deregulation is also discussed. Observations are made on the federal role in transportation data collection, and the need to evaluate the future of transportation statistics in the federal government is noted. Private sector input in the determination of data collection efforts is considered and major efforts by user groups to affect the data collection effort are discussed. A major TRB effort, the "Identification of Transportation Data Needs and Measures for Facilitation of Data Flows" is noted.
