Abstract:

A crash attenuator is described in which a series of hollow steel rings that crush on impact are set on a sliding aluminum frame. On impact, the frame starts to slide forward, thereby softening the impact. In a Minnesota skip-striping operation where a truck equipped with the attenuator was struck by a semitrailer truck travelling at 60 mph, neither the Minnesota Department of Transportation Driver nor the semitrailer truck driver were killed. Both drivers suffered only minor injuries. Operations personnel in Minnesota are enthusiastic about the attenuator.
