Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The paper examines the need for research, contextual factors that may affect the course and the quality of research, special areas for research, research objectives, and cites some significant next steps. Major obstacles to research are cited, and the need for sound data for policy development is noted. There is a need for understanding factors that influence passenger transportation decision-making, improved use of demographic data, and the implications of population shift for old and new areas. Contextual factors affecting ridesharing that need research are listed. These specific areas involve psychological, social, and economic aspects and cannot be fully understood without interdisciplinary study. Theory development is important in all these areas of research. The development of universal principles should be a prime objective. The need is noted for the recruitment and training of transportation behavior researchers, research tools such as terminology and definitions, technology transfer, survey and interview methodologies, statistical and data processing methodology, and the dissemination of information of findings.
