Accession Number: 00377917
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In this discussion, W. Lovejoy focuses on the transportation of energy and its impact on urban areas, particularly those along the eastern seaboard. The major problem that these areas face is that of handling the ocean or water movement of energy materials. The transportation of coal and of liquid natural gas (LNG) are considered. The question of the impact of LNG transshipment on Boston was raised by W. Brobst. K. Stein Hudson commented on the community disruption and the effect it could have on other cities. Comments are also made on the concept of an off-shore island for urban areas that can handle the transportation or use of dangerous fuels. The disposal of byproducts of coal-fired plants is also discussed. Other areas discussed include public awareness of safety issues, and the government role.
