Abstract:

This compendium is a product of a 3-year project to enhance rural transportation in developing countries by providing improved access to existing information on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of low-volume roads. The compendium discusses the concepts of compaction, the tests used to determine the amount of compaction required and then achieved, and the types of equipment used in the process. The ten texts that have been reprinted in the compendium in full or in excerpted portions are: Significance of Quality Control (Canadian Good Roads Association, 1964); Compaction, Chapter Vll (McGraw-Hill Book Co., lnc., 1971); Soils Manual for the Design of Asphalt Pavement Structures (The Asphalt Institute, March 1978); Mechanical Durability of Lateritic Gravels from Southeast Asia; Suggested Tests and Test Standards for Highway Uses (Australian Road Research Board, 1970); Test Procedures for Evaluation of Tropical Soil Properties, Chapter 2 (U.S. Agency for International Development, 1975); Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, Part II- Methods of Sampling and Testing (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, July 1978); The Constant Dry Weight Method-A No-Weighing Field Compaction Test (Ontario Department of Highways, 1968); Recommendations on Methods to Be Used For Testing Aggregates (Permanent International Association of Road Congresses; XVI World Road Congress, Vienna, 1979 draft); Hand-Feel Tests for Guiding the Compaction of Soils (University of ldaho, Boise, 1972); and Earth Compaction (McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., 1961).
