Abstract:

This article is excerpted from the introduction to the recently published TRB report of the same name, the successor to a 1958 HRB report entitled "Landslides and Engineering Practice." The author points out some of the changes that have occurred since the earlier report's publication, both in engineering practice and in the nature of the problem. For example, included in the new report are new methods of stability analysis and computer techniques to be used in implementing these methods. Furthermore, research in the last two decades has made possible a refinement in the definition of "landslides" itself. However, the scope of the problem has changed since a combination of inflation, increased construction in landslide prone areas, and use of larger cuts and fills in construction has resulted in considerably increased annual costs of landslides.
