Availability: Transportation Research Board 500 Fifth Street, NW Find a library where document is available Abstract: This paper discusses the effectiveness of a 100-mm (4-in.) wide compressible material that was installed at 305-m (1000-ft) intervals in a jointed, reinforced concrete pavement to reduce pavement blowups. The studies were made on an Interstate highway that carries some 30,000 vehicles's, which includes approximately 7000 trucks and buses. This paper compares the behavior of the pavement both before and after the installation of the pressure-relief joints. Brief discussions of the factors that indicate the need for such joints, the problems associated with their use, and the potential for their use under overlays are included. /Author/
