Abstract:

At the request of the Commission on Sociotechnical Systems of the National Research Council, the Transportation Research Board Executive Committee developed a list of ten issues in transportation that it considers to be the most critical today and for the near future. The critical issues identified, which are not listed in order of priority, are as follows: Financing requirements and alternatives for transportation systems and services; Energy efficiency in transportation; Intergovernmental responsibility for transportation systems; Transportation system maintenance technology and management; Transportation system performance criteria and design standards; Effects of transportation regulations; Improvement of existing nonurban transportation facilities; Transportation, land use control, and city forms; Transportation and the environment; and Transportation safety.
