Title: SIDE SHEAR ON PILES DRIVEN IN OVERSIZED PILOT HOLES (ABRIDGEMENT)

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In order to measure the actual side shear developed and to provide some insight into the mechanism controlling side shear in piles driven in oversized pilot holes, each of 3 concrete test piles were instrumented in the casting bed with full-bridge electronic-resistance-embedment strain-gauge circuits (transducers) located near its top and bottom. The mean diameter of the holes was estimated to be 48 cm (7.5 cm greater than the width of the piles). Two tests were conducted on each pile: (a) a maintained-load proof test to twice the design load, and (b) a rapid-load test to approximately 3.5 times the design load. The mean pile movement was calculated for each butt settlement reading, and the behavior of the piles was analyzed on the basis of the type of soil into which it was driven. An equation is presented which describes the development of the ultimate side shear for a pile driven into a clearly cohesionless soil profile. Calculation of earth pressure, and the ultimate skin friction are also discussed. The calculation of side shear and ultimate skin friction for a pile in predominantly clay profiles and a pile in stratified clay and sand are also outlined.
