Abstract:

This paper describes the philosophy and functional requirements of a computer-based system for urban transportation planning. It begins with a view of the current transportation problem and the resulting demands on the planner. After outlining a planning framework composed of three analytical activities--long-range planning, short-range planning, and system surveillance--the paper describes the functions of a software system that would support today's transportation planner. Such a system is currently under development at the Urban Mass Transportation Administration.
