Abstract:
A summary is presented of the types of retaining walls currently used in projects of U.S. Forest Service, Region 6. This paper points out the wide variety of structures available to the designer and the need for a systematic logic table is proposed, and an example of its use is provided. The factors considered most important in selecting a retaining wall for a Forest Service road are identified and discussed. One item emphasized is that selection of a structure should seldom be based only on economic considerations. Retaining walls can have a significant impact on the natural environment, long-and short-range management programs, and the safety of both construction personnel and road users.
