Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This report presents the results of a comprehensive review and evaluation of the approaches being used by highway agencies to minimize the use of chemicals in snow- and ice-removal operations consistent with maintaining an acceptable level of highway service. Procedures reported on include: prewetting salt (sodium chloride) with liquid chemicals; direct application of liquid chemicals; improved spreader calibration techniques; better management control; special training programs; better use of weather forecasts; use of abrasives in lieu of straight chemicals; and improved snowplow operations. Desirable chemical storage practices are also discussed. /NCHRP/
