Availability: Transportation Research Board 500 Fifth Street, NW Find a library where document is available Abstract: As a librarian for the Highway Safety Research Institute of the University of Michigan, the author indicates that the low use rate of the on-line system by HSRI is due in part to the lack of interaction with the Michigan Department of State Highway and Transportation personnel. She emphasizes the need for the MDSHT librarian and engineers to learn to use the system themselves, which would eliminate the present process whereby the request is transmitted from an engineer to the MDSHT librarian, to the HSRI librarian, and then to the data base. After commenting briefly on the system at the operational level, the author concludes that the system works well, although the data base could be improved; that the information is needed by researchers, field engineers, and managers; but that a greater effort must now be made to advertise and sell the system to those who could benefit from it.
