Abstract:

Completed research projects and projects currently underway are summarized in this circular. Research completed on human factors counter measures to improve highway-railway intersection safety, included a review of railroad-highway accidents and on appraisal of inherent driver safety potential. Research was conducted on urban railroad relocation which identified the nature and magnitude of the urban railroad problem on a nationwide basis, and developed a cost-benefit methodology for evaluating individual railroad relocation studies. A brief report has been completed which is entitled "High-Speed Passenger-Service Rail Corridors." A study on the visibility and audibility of trains approaching Rail-Highway Grade Crossings, identified desirable performance levels for audible devices and for visibility configurations on railroad locomotives, and tested several prototype units and methods. Recommendations were made for improving visibility and some limitations were set forth on the practical limitations audible devices. Research is presently underway on: new passive devices; grade crossing surfaces; state of the art study of railroad-highway grade crossing surfaces; crossing study (Indiana); accident potential study; in-vehicle devices; inventory of railroad-highway grade crossings; equipment standardization; innovative concepts; low-cost barrier; locomotive conspicuity; application guidelines; improved flashing lights; motion detection devices; and impact attenuation.
