Abstract: A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED FOR THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA, USING DATA AVAILABLE FROM THE 1963 TRI-STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION HOME INTERVIEW SURVEY, TO QUANTIFY CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE PEOPLE--JOB--TRANSPORTATION RELATIONSHIP FOR POVERTY-LEVEL FAMILIES. RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED IN THREE PHASES: A DESCRIPTIVE PROFILE OF SOCIAL AND TRAVEL CHARACTERISTICS AND VARIATIONS IN CHARACTERISTICS WITH HOUSEHOLD INCOME, SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF FAMILIES WITH RESPECT TO RESIDENCES AND JOB LOCATIONS, AND JOURNEY-TO-WORK CHARACTERISTICS ACCORDING TO INCOME CLASSIFICATION. SEVERAL QUANTIFIED CONCLUSIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR EACH PHASE.
