Title: CAPACITY ANALYSIS OF A HIGHWAY LINK

Abstract: A SUMMARY IS GIVEN OF WORK DIRECTED TOWARD INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF A SELECTED URBAN HIGHWAY NETWORK THROUGH A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO CAPACITY EVALUATION (UTILIZING STOCHASTIC METHODS WHERE POSSIBLE) AND THROUGH TIME-LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR DATA COLLECTION. THE NETWORK, WHICH WAS CONSIDERED TO BE A SUBSYSTEM WITHIN THE SYSTEM OF MAJOR TRAFFICWAYS, WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE SMALLER SUBSYSTEMS (FREE-FLOW HIGHWAY, BRIDGE TOLLBOOTHS, INTERSECTIONS WITH A FREEWAY) FOR EACH OF WHICH AN ANALYTIC MODEL WAS DEVELOPED. THE FIRST SECTION WAS ANALYZED BY USING HIGHWAY CAPACITY MANUAL PROCEDURES, THE SECOND BY QUEUEING THEORY (WITH PHOTOGRAPHS VALIDATION), AND THE THIRD BY NOMOGRAPHS DEVELOPED AND TESTED USING THE PHOTOGRAPHIC DATA. THE STUDY INDICATED THAT MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BRIDGE, TOLLBOOTHS, AND INTERSECTIONS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO ENABLE THE NETWORK TO HANDLE THE PREDICTED VOLUMES. HOWEVER, THESE IMPROVEMENTS WOULD NESESSITATE EITHER IMPROVING THE FREEWAY ALSO OR REDUCING ITS DEMAND VOLUMES.
