Title: USE OF WATER-REDUCING, RETARDING AND WATER-REDUCING AND RETARDING ADMIXTURES IN HIGHWAY CONCRETE

Abstract: THE USE IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION OF CHEMICAL ADMIXTURES IS REPORTED. THESE ADMIXTURES ARE USED TO MODIFY THE PROPERTIES OF FRESH AND HARDENED CONCRETE, SUCH AS TO INCREASE FLUIDITY AND WORKING QUALITIES OF A GIVEN MIXTURE WITHOUT INCREASE IN WATER CONTENT, DELAY SETTING, INCREASE STRENGTH OR DECREASE THE COST. THE ADMIXTURES ARE CLASSIFIED CHEMICALLY AND THE EFFECTS ON FRESH AND HARDENED CONCRETE ARE PRESENTED. THE PROPERTIES OF FRESH CONCRETE MOST AFFECTED ARE SLUMP, AIR CONTENT, WATER REQUIREMENT, BLEEDING OR SEDIMENTATION, AND HARDENING RATE. THE PROPERTIES OF HARDENED CONCRETE AFFECTED ARE FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, DRYING SHRINKAGE, RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING, CREEP, AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY. IN ADDITION, APPLICATIONS, FACTORS AFFECTING PERFORMANCE, TESTING METHODS, DISPENSING EQUIPMENT, STORAGE, AND QUALITY CONTROL ARE DISCUSSED.
