Title: SINGLE LIFT CONSTRUCTION WITH HOT PLANT MIX BASE

Abstract: IN 1963, THE WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT RECORDED TEMPERATURES AT REGULAR TIME INTERVALS AND AT VERTICAL INTERVALS OF 1 1/2 INCHES THROUGH BITUMINOUS STABILIZED BASE DURING THE ROLLING PROCEDURE. CORES WERE CUT FROM THE LOCATIONS AND TESTED. THE MIX DESIGN WAS CHANGED TO DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE IN FINAL COMPACTION OF LIFTS OF DIFFERENT DEPTHS. TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED WHEN USING THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROLLERS AND TEMPERATURES PLOTTED AGAINST THE VERTICAL POSITION OF THE THERMOCOUPLES IN INCHES ABOVE AND BELOW THE SUBGRADE ELEVATION PRODUCED CURVES SHOWING THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES THROUGH THE BASE VERTICALLY AT SELECTED PERIODS OF ELAPSED TIME. TEMPERATURE IS LOST FROM THE BOTTOM 2 INCHES OF THE BASE DUE TO TRANSMISSION INTO THE SUBGRADE, THE SUBGRADE TEMPERATURE RISES. RESULTS SHOW THAT HOT PLANT MIX BITUMINOUS STABILIZED BASE CAN BE CONSTRUCTED IN A SINGLE LIFT. MIX DESIGN, TEMPERATURE AND THE SELECTION OF COMPACTION EQUIPMENT ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS IN SINGLE LIFT CONSTRUCTION.
