Title: ANALYSIS OF AASHO ROAD TEST ASPHALT PAVEMENT DATA BY THE ASPHALT INSTITUTE

Abstract: A SERIES OF EQUATIONS IS PRESENTED WHICH ARE USED TO INTERPRET THE MEASUREMENTS OF ASPHALT PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE MADE AT THE AASHO ROAD TEST. THEY RELATE PERFORMANCE TO TRAFFIC, AXLE LOAD AND PAVEMENT THICKNESS AND CAN BE USED IN DESIGN OF FOR ESTIMATING THE REMAINING USEFUL LIFE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. THE ROAD TEST GAVE NO INFORMATION ON HOW SOILS OF DIFFERENT STRENGTHS PERFORM IN SERVICE UNDER A ROAD . IN THE ANALYSIS EFFORTS ARE MADE TO DETECT AND ELIMINATE ANY BIAS INTRODUCED BY CHANGES IN THE TRAFFIC RATE, DIFFERENCES IN THE SEVERITY OF THE TWO SPRING THAWS AND IN INITIAL CONDITIONS OF THE TEST SECTIONS, THE TIMES AT WHICH TRAFFIC STARTED AND STOPPED ON THE TEST ROAD AND THE RELATIVELY SHORT TESTING PERIOD OF TWO YEARS. FURTHER VERIFICATION OF THE EQUATIONS IS NEEDED AND A SAFETY FACTOR IS ALSO NEEDED TO REDUCE THE PROBABILITY THAT A PAVEMENT WILL BECOME UNSERVICEABLE BEFORE IT HAS SERVED ITS DESIGN LIFESPAN. /RRL/
