Title: A STRUCTURAL APPROACH TO SEALING JOINTS IN CONCRETE
Accession Number: 00205318
Record Type: Component
Abstract: SEALING OF JOINTS WHICH GAP SUBSTANTIALLY WITH CONTRACTION AND EXPANSION OF THE JOINED SECTIONS OF CONCRETE PAVEMENT WAS CONSIDERED. SEALING INSERT DESIGN WAS DEVELOPED ON THE BASIS OF THE COMPRESSION STRESS-STRAIN PRINCIPLE. ELASTOMERIC BLOCK INSERTS, TUBULAR INSERTS, LEVERED INSERTS, AND SPRING-SUPPORTED INSERTS WERE DESCRIBED, AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES WERE ILLUSTRATED. SURFACE DEFLECTION FACTORS, WITH EMPHASIS ON VOLUME CONSIDERATIONS AND THE MOTOR ELEMENT, WERE EVALUATED FOR THESE INSERTS. DATA OBTAINED LED TO EVOLUTION OF A MORE ADVANCED INSERT DESIGN, DEEP CONTOURED BUTTERFLY INSERTS. METHODS FOR USING MATERIALS OF WIDELY DIFFERING SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEALING JOINTS IN CONCRETE ARE EXPLAINED.
