Abstract: THE HISTORY OF THE AESTHETIC DESIGN OF URBAN FREEWAYS IS GIVEN. CRITERIA FOR AESTHETIC DESIGN ARE LISTED. THE FREEWAY SHOULD BE INTEGRATED WITH THE ENVIRONMENT, SHOULD FOLLOW THE GEOMETRY OF THE LANDSCAPE WHETHER TOPOGRAPHICAL OR MAN MADE, SHOULD RESPECT EXISTING SPACE ENCLOSURES, SHOULD SEPARATE THE FREEWAY FROM ADJACENT DEVELOPMENT, AND SHOULD CONTAIN PLEASING VIEWS FOR THE DRIVER. DEPRESSED AND ELEVATED HIGHWAYS ARE DISCUSSED. TO MAKE THE RIGHT OF WAY MORE INTERESTING THE WIDTH OF THE MEDIAN AND THE ELEVATIONS OF THE SEPARATE ROADWAYS CAN BE VARIED, A SEQUENCE OF OPEN AND CLOSED SPACES CAN BE PROVIDED, AND LONG VIEWS IN THE LINE OF SIGHT OF THE DRIVER CAN BE USED.
