Title: USE OF PHOSPHORIC ACID IN SOIL STABILIZATION

Abstract: THIS INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF PHOSPHORIC ACID TREATMENTS ON THE STABILITY OF COMPACTED CALCAREOUS AND NON-CALCAREOUS CLAY SOILS. UNIMMERSED AND IMMERSED STRENGTHS AND FREEZE-THAW RESISTANCE OF PHOSPHORIC ACID-TREATED SOIL SPECIMENS WERE USED AS CRITERIA FOR STABILITY. THE UNIMMERSED AND IMMERSED STRENGTHS OF PHOSPHORIC ACID-TREATED SOILS WERE STUDIED RELATIVE TO THE CURING CONDITIONS, CARBONATE CONTENTS OF SOILS, AND USE OF SECONDARY ADDITIVES. MOIST CURING WAS FOUND BENEFICIAL TO STRENGTH. SOILS CONTAINING CALCIUM CARBONATE REQUIRED MORE PHOSPHORIC ACID THAN CALCIUM CARBONATE FREE SOILS BECAUSE CALCIUM CARBONATE REACTED WITH THE ACID AVAILABLE FOR STABILIZATION. NO WORTHWHILE BENEFIT WAS FOUND FROM THE USE OF SECONDARY ADDITIVES. X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS AND QUANTITATIVE CHEMICAL ANALYSES WERE USED TO TRACE THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS AFTER TREATMENT. THESE ANALYSES LEAD TO THE CONCLUSION THAT PHOSPHORIC ACID AND CLAY MINERALS REACT TO PRODUCE AN AMORPHOUS ALUMINUM PHOSPHATE GEL WHICH SERVES AS A CEMENTING AGENT. /AUTHOR/
