CHEMICAL TREATMENTS FOR SURFACE HARDENING OF SOIL-CEMENT AND SOIL-LIME-FLYASH

Abstract:

CHEMICAL SURFACE TREATMENTS OF STABILIZED SOIL WERE INVESTIGATED TO INCREASE STRENGTH IN THE UPPER LAYER OF PAVEMENT. SURFACE TREATMENTS INVESTIGATED' IN THE LABORATORY WERE CALCIUM CHLORIDE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, SODIUM CARBONATE, AND SODIUM SILICATE. A PUNCH-TYPE BEARING TEST, THE IOWA BEARING VALUE TEST, WAS UTILIZED TO GIVE A MEASURE OF SURFACE HARDNESS OF THE TREATED SOIL. THE STABILIZED SOIL CYLINDERS WERE COMPACTED TO STANDARD PROCTOR DENSITY BY MEANS OF A DROP-HAMMER MOLDING APPARATUS. CURING SOLUTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHEMICALS WERE SPRINKLED ON THE CUT SOIL SURFACES IN VARYING AMOUNTS. SOIL-LIME-FLYASH WAS BENEFITED MOST BY APPLICATION OF SODIUM SILICATE SOLUTIONS. CALCIUM CHLORIDE OR SODIUM CARBONATE SOLUTIONS WERE NOT PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE SURFACE HARDENERS FOR SOIL-CEMENT. DAILY WETTING WAS IN ITSELF BENEFICIAL TO THE SILTY SOIL AND THIS ALONE INCREASED THE BEARING STRENGTH ABOUT 30% OVER THAT FROM ORDINARY MOIST CURING. DAILY SPRINKLING DECREASED THE BEARING STRENGTH OF THE STABILIZED SANDY SOIL.
