Title: PLASTIC MOISTURE BARRIERS FOR HIGHWAY SUBGRADE PROTECTION
Accession Number: 00236041
Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: MANY SOILS WITH SUFFICIENT STRENGTH AT LOW WATER CONTENTS TO SERVE AS SUBGRADES OR SUBBASES BECOME UNSTABLE WITH INCREASE IN WATER CONTENT AFTER CONSTRUCTION. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATED THE FEASIBILITY OF PLASTIC FILMS AS MOISTURE BARRIERS. THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND PERMEABILITIES OF THE PLASTICS, THE EFFECTIVENESS AND PUNCTURE RESISTANCE OF SEVERAL TYPICAL FILMS, LAB AND TEST ROAD EVALUATIONS, AND COST REDUCTIONS ARE DISCUSSED. THE POLYETHYLENE FILM WAS FOUND TO RETARD WATER MOVEMENT IN BOTH LIQUID AND VAPOR PHASES. THE USE OF PLASTIC FILM WAS FOUND TO BE PRACTICABLE IN THE FIELD.
