Title: SOIL STABILIZATION WITH LIME-FLYASH MIXTURES: PRELIMINARY STUDIES WITH SILTY AND CLAYEY SOILS

Abstract: RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF SOME LABORATORY STUDIES OF LIME- FLYASH STABILIZATION OF SILTY AND CLAYEY SOILS SAMPLED IN TEXAS, VIRGINIA, IOWA AND KENTUCKY. A TEST METHOD WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF LIME-FLYASH STABILIZED SILTY AND CLAYEY SOILS. A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION WAS CONDUCTED OF THE MERITS OF LIME-FLYASH STABILIZATION WITH THE SOILS SAMPLED. THE STUDIES WITH SILTY AND CLAYEY SOILS WERE PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH: (1) AMOUNT OF LIME AND FLYASH TO BE ADDED, (2) RATIO OF LIME TO FLYASH, (3) MOISTURE CONTENT DURING MIXING AND COMPACTION, (4) LENGTH OF CURING, AND (5) CURING CONDITIONS. THE TEST METHOD DEVELOPED FOR THE EVALUATION OF LIME-FLYASH-STABILIZED SILTY AND CLAYEY SOILS INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING STEPS: (1) PREPARATION OF MIXTURES, (2) MOLDING OF SPECIMENS, (3) CURING OF SPECIMENS, AND (4) TESTING OF SPECIMENS. THESE STEPS ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. TEST PROCEDURES UTILIZED THE UNCONFINED-COMPRESSION TEST. THE APPARATUS USED IN THE TESTS CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING: (1) MECHANICAL MIXER, (2) COMPACTION APPARATUS, (3) MOIST CABINET, (4) TESTING MACHINE, AND (5) BALANCE. AFTER SPECIMENS ARE CURED, THEY ARE COMPLETELY IMMERSED IN DISTILLED WATER AT ABOUT 70 F FOR 24 HOURS. EACH SPECIMEN IS THEN TESTED FOR UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH. THE MAXIMUM TEST LOAD CAUSING FAILURE OF THE SPECIMEN IS TAKEN AS ITS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH.
