Abstract:
A SOILS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM OF NUMERICAL INTERPRETATION BASED ON SIMPLE IDENTIFICATION TESTS WAS DEVELOPED FOR LOCAL CONDITIONS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. INCLUDED IN THE INVESTIGATION WERE: (1) DETERMINATION OF SPECIFICATION LIMITS FOR SURFACE COURSE MATERIALS FOR USE WITHOUT BITUMEN; (2) SPECIFICATIONS FOR MATERIAL COURSES TO RECEIVE LIGHT BITUMINOUS SURFACE; (3) DEVELOPMENT OF A NUMERICAL METHOD FOR DESIGNING PAVEMENT THICKNESS REQUIRED OVER GIVEN SUBGRADES OR LOWER COURSE BASES. AN ACCELERATED WEATHERING TEST FOR SHALES FOR PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION OR FOR THE SUBGRADE AND A METHOD FOR ASSESSING SANDSTONE ARE DEVELOPED. THE MAGNITUDE OF TRAFFIC LOAD IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE FREQUENCY OF HEAVY LOAD FOR DETERMINING IF FAILURE WOULD OCCUR. LOAD HAD NOTICEABLE EFFECT ON TOTAL PAVEMENT THICKNESS, BUT SMALL EFFECT ON THE REQUIRED THICKNESS OF SURFACE COURSE. THE RULES AND FORMULAS DEVELOPED HAVE APPLICATION IN OTHER AREAS WITH SIMILAR CLIMATE AND TRAFFIC. /AUTHOR/
