LABORATORY AND FIELD INVESTIGATIONS REPORT OF DURABILITY AS AFFECTED BY: METHOD OF TESTING, SIZE AND SHAPE OF SPECIMENS, METHOD OF SAMPLING, CHARACTER OF AGGREGATE, QUALITY OF CEMENT PASTE, PERMEABILITY AND ABSORPTION AS A FACTOR IN DISTINTEGRATION, AND EFFECT OF WATER-PROOF COATING. AN ACCELERATED FREEZING AND THAWING TEST IS PRESENTED AS A MENAS OF TESTING THE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE AND CONCRETE AGGREGATES TO WEATHERING. THE CONCRETE DURABILITY STUDY CONCLUDES THAT: (1) ALTERNATE FREEZING AND THAWING IS A VALUABLE METHOD OF STUDYING THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE AND CONCRETE AGGREGATES, (2) THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE IS GREATLY AFFECTED BY THE QUALITY OF THE CEMENT PASTE, (3) A WATER-CEMENT RATIO OF 0.8 OR MORE IS NOT LIKELY TO GIVE A CONCRETE ADEQUATE DURABILITY IF THE CONDITIONS OF EXPOSURE ARE SEVERE, (4) THE PROPER PLACING, HANDLING AND CURING OF THE CONCRETE ARE AS IMPORTANT AS THE MIX DESIGN, (5) WATERTIGHT LAYERS FORMED EITHER BY EXCESSIVE MANIPULATION, OR BY WASHCOATS, PLASTERS OR OTHER TREATMENTS, REDUCE THE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE TO WEATHERING UNLESS THEY ARE PLACED ON THOSE PORTIONS OF THE STRUCTURE WHER WATER WOULD OTHERWISE ENTER, (6) THE USE OF UNSOUND AGGREGATE PRODUCES UNSOUND CONCRETE, THE RESISTANCE OF THE MORTAR TO DISINTEGRATION BEING ONLY SLIGHTLY EFFECTIVE IN PROTECTING THE AGGREGATE, AND (7) ANY AGGREGATE CONTAINING ABSORPTIVE CHERT SHOULD NOT BE USED UNTIL AFTER VERY CAREFUL INVESTIGATION.
