Abstract:

DEVELOPMENT OF THE WATER-CEMENT RATIO THEORY OF THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE MIXTURES CALLS ATTENTION TO THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF MIXING WATER. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF LABORATORY TESTS BY THE MINNESOTA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT AND FIELD TESTS MADE BY THE IOWA HIGHWAY COMMISSION. SOURCES OF INACCURACY IN WATER MEASUREMENT ARE INDICATED AND REMEDIES SUGGESTED. OBSERVATIONS ARE MADE ON SEVEN DIFFERENT MIXERS OF THREE DIFFERENT MAKES IN ACTUAL OPERATION IN THE FIELD. IMPROVEMENTS ARE SUGGESTED WHICH WILL ELIMINATE THE PRINCIPAL SOURCES OF AIR AND WATER MEASUREMENT ON MIXERS IN USE AT A NOMINAL EXPENSE.
