The authors build on the findings of National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) research to investigate significant use cases of DTMs during the construction phase of a highway project, as well as the benefits of and barriers to implementing DTMs. A survey of members of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Committee on Construction revealed the cases utilized most frequently among state departments of transportation were: grade work, survey verification, automated machine guidance, quantity measurements, and field staking.
