Abstract:

The uncertainties associated with making design load estimates for use in determining pavement structure requirements are many. A brief discussion of the problem of estimating the present or base-year annual average daily load on an existing route or alignment is presented. The discussion focuses on the five-axle tractor-semitrailer, which is regarded as causing more than 80 percent of traffic-attributable pavement damage on Minnesota's Trunk Highway System. (Author)
