Digital Copy: Abstract: This framework provides for 4 categories for maintenance research: (1) Preservation and extension of life of existing materials and equipment (includes deferred maintenance, preventive maintenance, and routine maintenance); (2) Maximization of use and effectiveness of existing materials and equipment (structures repair and rehabilitation, pavement resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation); (3) Development of new and improved materials and equipment (waste material utilization, local materials, improved materials, improved equipment, and maintenance-free design); (4) Improvement of technology transfer process (designed process; targeting of audience, targeting of technology transfer process to audience, provision of funding and support, and provision of "feedback" mechanism).
