Abstract:

Electric vehicles (EVs) and eco-routing strategies have both attracted more and more attention as road transportation are associated with an increasing trend in energy consumption. Existing research shows that the current eco-routing strategies for traffic flows applies the strategy for conventional vehicles (CVs) based on the energy consumption characteristics of CVs. However, the energy consumption of combustion engines and electric motors are significantly different. It leads to different energy consumption characteristics of EVs and CVs, especially during urban driving conditions. It cannot maximize the energy-saving efficiency for EVs when using the eco-routes planned for CVs. The distribution of vehicle-specific power (VSP) represents better the traffic variations for modeling energy consumption of traffic flows, compared with city-specific driving cycles. In this context, this study designed an eco-routing method for EVs, primarily based on the energy consumption rates and the facility- and speed-specific VSP distribution of EVs. The method includes three parts: 1) Analyzing the difference in energy consumption rates of CVs and EVs in VSP bins; 2) Analyzing the effects of different speed correction factors (SCFs) on the energy consumption factor of EVs and CVs further; 3) Proposing different eco-routing strategies for EVs and CVs. Results of a case study in Beijing show that the method performs well in evaluating the energy consumption for both CVs and EVs. CVs and EVs have a noticeable distinction in eco-routes. For EVs, it obtained 11.3% extra energy savings by using the proposed eco-routing method for EVs comparing with using the method for CVs.
