Title: Using Data Factoring and Clustering Methods to Investigate Driver Perception to the Diffusion of Electric Vehicles in the UK

Abstract: The ‘Road to Zero’ initiative in the UK put forward a target of having all vehicles be effectively zero emissions by 2050. The uptake of Electric Vehicle (EVs) is relatively low in the UK compared to the best performing countries such as Norway. This study proposes a holistic process to investigate driver perception related to both barriers and incentives towards EVs using dimension reduction process and data clustering methods. THREE factors related to barriers ( Battery/ Range, Economic Uncertainities and Disadvantages, and Environment Efficiency ) and THREE components related to incentives ( Battery Technology, ICEV Penalisation, and Competitive Supply) were identified through the analysis. Despite of considering the population as a whole, the study developed a procedure to group them by using two-step clustering technique considering their age, gender and occupation status , and TEN main clusters were identified. Cross-tabulation of cluster opinions were carried out to explore the average response of each cluster to bring some indication of the significance of the barrier factors and incentive components attached to each cluster. By generating some graphical outputs, the expected uptake rate for each cluster was produced to represent the diffusion of EVs. Despite existing incentives, the diffusion of EVs is still in its early stages. Some clusters are found to be less opposed to owning an EV, and expect to own an EV in the near future, for example men aged 55-64 in a senior occupation . Although, this does not dictate the overall uptake by this cluster by 2050.
