Static and repeated-load testing, which estimate properties that have direct relations with distress, were used to evaluate asphalt mixtures designed and prepared by using the Texas blackbase design procedure. Three mixtures containing three different aggregate types and a range of asphalt contents were tested and evaluated at three test temperatures. Optimum asphalt contents were determined for various engineering material properties, including tensile strength, fatigue life, static modulus of elasticity, and permanent deformation. The differences between design asphalt contents and the values derived from experimental tests were often quite significant, depending on test temperature and material type. The asphalt contents obtained by the Texas procedure were found to be generally higher than the optimum values identified for distress-related material properties. Optimum asphalt contents for static tensile properties were generally less than those for repeated-load properties. (Author)
